ECU judges the low or high air fuel ratio according to the difference of electromotive force from oxygen sensor, and controls the duration of fuel injection accordingly. However, if the electromotive force of the output is abnormal due to the fault of the oxygen sensor, (ECU) computer can not accurately control the air-fuel ratio. Therefore, the oxygen sensor can also compensate for the air-fuel ratio error caused by the wear of other parts of the mechanical and EFI system. It can be said that it is the only intelligent sensor in EFI system.

The function of the sensor is to determine whether there is excess oxygen in the exhaust of the engine after combustion, that is, the oxygen content, and to convert the oxygen content into voltage signal to transmit to the engine computer, so that the engine can achieve closed-loop control with excess air factor as the goal; to ensure that the ternary catalytic converter can control hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides in the exhaust. (NOX) All three pollutants have the greatest conversion efficiency, and the transformation and purification of pollutants are carried out to the greatest extent.
